My students need this subscription to help them see and understand that math is used in real world situations all of the time. These magazines also tie into language arts , science, and S.S. standards.
I teach 5th grade math to around 80 students. These students are amazing, fun, smart children. Our classroom is not just teacher lead, but the students have ownership in their learning and are able to lead as well. We use a math workshop approach in our learning. Students are allowed to move around the room and find the best learning area for themselves. We use hands-on activities and try to incorporate as much technology into our lessons as we can.
My goal is to help students love math by the time they leave me!
I want them to see that there are many different ways to solve a math problem and that everyone can be good at math. I just need to help them find the way that best suits their learning.
We have students from many different financial backgrounds. Our school is a uniform school and as part of our school, all students receive free breakfast and lunch. No child should have to be hungry.
My Project
These magazines will provide my students with articles and activities that show math in real world situations. This allows the students to see that there is value in knowing the skills they are learning on a daily basis. This allows them to be more engaged in math and provides them with clear examples. It answers their question of "How will we use this in the future?". These magazines also tie in major skills for Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. The articles talk about new thing the students may not have heard of before and introduces them to events and cultures throughout the world.
