Our school is solely an upper elementary school serving third through fifth grade. More and more students are coming to our school reading below grade level. Therefore, our school is focusing on independent reading.
All students need an opportunity to have choice in the books that they want to read.
Providing students book choice means providing them with an ample number of books to choose from. This is my goal for our students. However, I need more high interest level books in order to do this.
My Project
The fiction and nonfiction leveled readers will be used daily in class during guided reading groups. The books will help keep students interested in reading and still be on their reading level. The books will help in teaching vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The goal is that when they read books on their reading level, then that will help them grow as readers.
Reading books on their reading level will help students blossom as readers.
Students will be more engaged at the guided reading group table, because the leveled readers chosen are of high interest. The goal is that their reading level will increase due to being able to teach appropriate reading strategies using the leveled readers.
