Help me give my students books by author/illustrator Jan Thomas to encourage independent reading skills, through fun and endearing stories and characters.
My first grade class is a group of twenty-two energetic children who love to learn all that they can, whenever and wherever they can. My students are highly inquisitive and eager to learn each and everyday. They love coming to school and stepping into the world of learning where they get to "be all they can be" and strengthen their love of learning through literacy, math, science, social studies, technology, agriculture and much more. We are a Title One school in a small, rural community, with a very high poverty rate; even so, our staff and families want the very best for our students and strive to give them the very best education that we can. Ours is a tight-knit community with a consistent level of parent and community involvement.
My Project
When first graders begin to fall in love with reading, they are introduced to new authors and illustrators (and their beloved characters) and one of those authors/illustrators, quickly becoming one of their favorites, this year, is Jan Thomas. She has created funny characters through silly stories, such as "Rhyming Dust Bunnies" and "Is Everyone Ready for Fun?". These characters are very funny and very endearing to my students, which causes the story to be engaging...stories that we want to read again and again and again.
These books by Jan Thomas can introduce my students to a variety of literary skills, such as speech bubbles, rhyming words, punctuation, voice inflection and fluency.
We already have one of Jan's books, "Rhyming Dust Bunnies", but we would like to add all of these selections to our classroom library. "Is Everyone Ready for Fun?" will allow us to learn about speech bubbles and create opportunities to learn more about story elements, such as beginning, middle and ending.
"What Is Chasing Duck?" is part of the Hysterical Giggle Gang Series, which are books with silly characters, who have problems needing to be solved. They will be able to build their literary skills, such as schema, inferencing, and comprehension (who, what, when, where, why and how) while also building their independent reading skills, through familiar text. With the Giggle Gang Series, my students will be able to enjoy vibrant illustrations and familiar text, with stories that make them laugh and leave them coming back for more and more. "The Doghouse", "Can You Make a Scary Face?", "Pumpkin Trouble", "A Birthday for Cow" and many more titles are characters and books that will provide FUN and endless learning opportunities for my students!
