Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are recently arrived immigrants to the United States who are all English language learners. Many of them have had limited formal education in their countries, some of whom are illiterate in their native languages, and now they are thrust into a high school environment in a language that is unfamiliar to them.

Even though some of my students have jobs that require them to work until 1 or 2 in the morning, they still show up for school every day, ready to learn, because they recognize the importance of education.

My Project

Students will use these materials as part of the culmination of a unit examining children’s literature. They will first read the books to analyze the components of a children's book. Then they will create their own original books. They will work in small groups to draft, edit, revise, and publish their works. Students are responsible for creating original content, including illustrations or photos. Within their groups, students will need to choose a role which complements their strengths (such as editor or illustrator).

Students will be able to improve their literacy and English language skills as a result of this project because they will be required to read, write, think critically and work as part of a team.
