This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach students who have been admitted into a high ability program that runs from grades one to five in our school. While they share a class, they are working at a variety of different levels. I want to encourage them to grow in their skills as much as possible.
They work very hard and are motivated to learn new things.
When given the chance, they have shown high growth that can be displayed on standardized assessments in addition to observations by adults in their life.
My Project
My students will use these materials in countless ways so I will do my best to explain some of them. During a fantasy genre unit, they will use these games to be responsible for creating the world in which they interact. They will create it from the ground up and this will improve their abilities to tell stories and create settings and characters. They will also create a fantasy character to role play as in these worlds. The role playing aspect will require them to think as their character and act as the character would. They will need to think critically and make choices as someone else, improving their ability to sympathize and make connections.
They will also be using many math skills as exercises as this require the use of statistics and dice rolls to determine outcomes.
They will practice geography and mapping skills, as well as designing their own puzzles. Many of these games will also require group decisions to be made. They'll develop new strategies and decision-making skills based on evidence and be able to take risks in a friendly and safe environment.
