My students are very sweet and driven to do what it takes to finish out their schooling in a strong manner. However, they live with reading comprehension issues and the low self esteem that comes with that struggle. We have many hands on activities that allow students to work on their ability to read and write on their level, yet show that they understand the grade level content.
I am daily pleasantly surprised by the very deep thoughts that are shown through observing class discussions and their drawings that assist in making connections to the lessons.
One student is unable to write complete thoughts, yet his drawings of stick figures that show he understands the vocabulary are outstanding. These students deserve to have the same education that their general education peers get.
My students' families come from every walk of life. Many have family that is incarcerated at the local prison, while others have family members that work as guards at the same prison. Students may even be children of ranchers, farmers, or university professors. Our town is one of many small rural communities blessed to have a local state university at its core.
My students are kids that are able to function in small class settings aiding in their ability to focus. The traditional classroom is not ideal. They need cooperative grouping with flexible seating in order to learn best.
Students will use headphones to record their papers, how they read, and to listen to their exams individually created for them.
The anchor charts created will stay on the walls all year to aid their recall of information learned.
