Do you remember when you mastered turning on and using a computer? Or learning that new app? Using technology in the classroom sets students up for those successes every day we use it. I need to be as current in new trends/apps/software as possible to help students and teachers be successful.
Being able to use technology and get reluctant learners engaged in and excited about their own learning includes being able to understand that technology and have access to the newest strategies.
I have been teaching for over 14 years now grades 6 through 12. I teach English, reading, economics, and history. I have watched trends in teaching evolve from worksheets to technology. Because worksheets and book work are no longer the norm, I need to ensure I bring the latest and best technology into my classroom where my students are more up-to-date than I am. Many students are exposed to technology at a younger age nowadays and walk into class knowing more (sometimes) than the teacher. Therefore, it is important for me to obtain newer technology (an iPad, speakers, cables, etc) and attend trainings for that technology (Promethean board, Apple TV, ActiSlate) with workshops and PDs.
My Project
I am requesting a new iPad Air because technology is a big thing at my school, with almost every aspect of teaching being digital. Teachers are being asked to constantly utilize digital workspace, documents, and databases as a means of communication, instruction, and assessment. I would be able to attend meetings, trainings, and instruct while learning more about the programs and methods offered for 21 Century learning and teaching.
Unfortunately, teachers do not have mobile technology and must be locked down to the one desktop if using technology. Having an iPad with remote connectivity and Apple TV would enable me to use more technology with my students and teachers. Having an iPad and being able to move around the class would enable me to interact with students as they are working, rather than be tied down to a desktop.
Because my school and county are edging towards a "BYOD" (bring your own device) environment, having an iPad and Apple TV to use in creating digital-based lessons and activities, instructing students in a method they are familiar with and respond to, and assessing them in the same style will move my students and teachers that much further into the 21 century.
The end results of higher student achievement and stronger teacher engagement are a result within reach if this project is supported.
