Help me give my students engaging lessons to understand the Native Americans, the Puritans, the fundamentals of the writing process, and the essence of contemporary literature.
My students in grade eleven are hard-working, multi-tasking-style learners. They balance academics, athletics, and social commitments with after school and weekend jobs. They range from high to low socioeconomic levels as well as a broad range of learning levels. Their ethnic backgrounds are diverse; foreign exchange students share the halls of our school.
My students are winners in the classroom, standouts on the field and court, and compassionate future leaders of our community.
They work together with faculty members to achieve greatness each and every day.
My Project
My students will use the materials to learn about Native American Origin myths, Puritanism, and the writing process in new and differentiated ways. Our American literature courses are divided into regular sections and honors sections, so these materials will help to create different levels of teaching and learning. The powerpoint introductions will provide the means to practice quality note-taking, and the writing materials will help to turn those notes into polished paragraphs and essays.
Comparing a contemporary version of a classic novel with its predecessor will help students see the American dream in different decades and how it evolves.
Students will be able to read Sara Benincasa's novel, Great, and make comparisons to the Great Gatsby. In the end, the dreams will connect back to the stories told by the Native Americans. These materials will provide the means to a cyclical curriculum by ending the year connecting to where we started the year.
