Help me give my students in grades 1-4 the most current and engaging Scholastic News and StoryWorks reading/writing materials. These monthly magazines will be in the hands of students and the content will be connected to other subjects.
Getting kids to LOVE reading, writing and connect it to other important subject areas is the goal of every teacher. In order to achieve this goal, teacher need materials that keep the enthusiasm for reading and writing at the forefront of each lesson.
Our students are kids who want to know the how's and why's of the world from science, to history as well as current events.
They are motivated by "experts" and want to take what they have learned and apply it to their own educational path.
We are lucky to have a diverse community, where over 10 different languages are spoken. Kids support other kids who are learning and also raise the bar for achieving more both academically and socially. It's a place of community, family and where students know they are at the center of every decision.
All teachers know we are blessed to be part of this school, community and part of these children's educational experience. This is not "my" school, it's "our" school and we want everyone to succeed.
My Project
Scholastic and Storyworks magazines have been a link for teachers to use as a tool to engage kids in poetry, non-fiction, drama and even debate! These resources help kids make connections to the structure of language, writing and communication within many subject areas such as science, current events and history.
Students inquisitive minds are pulled into articles about robots, endangered animals, Egypt and modeled by mentor texts.
It's from resources like Scholastic and Storyworks that kids build a love of reading and writing and connect to their world.
Through the digital resources, students can hear from the authors of the articles and their process of writing and researching. Teachers also have access to many paired texts, videos and genres digitally, which allows for rich classroom discussion and shared ideas. No classroom student should be without this critical learning tool that captures not only reading, writing and language but issues that are important to kids.
