Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Having the “EL pocket” in our grade makes our students incredibly respectful to different cultures, languages, and learning needs. One of those needs is books for Spanish-speaking students; which in our case is about 50% of our class.

As students from other countries join our classroom, they crave to connect with others, with the content, and with engaging literature.

Our reading units mainly revolve around understanding character development in fiction stories and identifying main ideas from nonfiction texts. The Spanish-speaking students in our class haven’t been able to properly explore these topics in their own reading because of how limited our class library is.

This project will help my students have equitable access to the learning in my classroom by providing texts in their primary language. Students have been asking for Spanish books so that they can engage in reading at home as well. Furthermore, since I have these texts in English, this will allow all of my students to engage in conversations about their reading!
