This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach an early childhood special education classroom in a school district in a low-income neighborhood. Being a self-contained classroom, it is low in number but high in need for support. There can be up to four students enrolled in this classroom, each requiring adult assistance to get basic needs met.
Each child that enters my classroom is delayed in several domains.
Students that enter this classroom are often delayed in their verbal skills, self-help skills, physical skills, and cognitive skills. Children learn through basic sign language, songs, movement, visuals, and play.
My Project
Thanks to the creativity of a teacher, I was able to get my hands on a year of functional storyboards from the internet. These storyboards use pictures to work on reading skills such as comprehension, retelling, character development, as well as sequencing. Since the students that enter my classroom have very limited verbal abilities, these stories will greatly enhance the effectiveness of our class story time.
While these storyboards will be an amazing addition to my classroom, I need the corresponding books in order for my students to utilize them.
The books included in this project will be added to my personal collection to give me resources for the entire year. My students have very young, wiggly bodies that makes sitting and listening to a story a challenge at times. The lap pads that are included in this project are intended to calm my students and increase their attention during story time.
