My students need differentiation in reading, these magazines will allow our students different ways to read stories and cover the TEKS that we teach all year.
I teach about 90 fifth graders each year. Students rotate through my classroom throughout the day. My students range from ELL (English Language Learner) students with their main language, either Spanish and Vietnamese, to my regular students ranging from having a disability to gifted and talented students. Our school is a Title 1 school, with 70% receiving free and reduced lunches. Some of my students have only been in the States for less than a year.
Sometimes it is hard finding differentiation to teach all of these students the same concept.
I have just gone to a training for Balanced Literacy, my students will now be rotating through stations, in order to learn the TEK that is being taught that week. So there will be differentiation for all my students by offering different centers for reading and understanding. The magazines I selected offer just this differentiation for one of the centers. I believe it would benefit my students a great deal in intervention and classroom time to help them understand TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) to be successful in my class and to prepare for 6th grade.
My Project
These STORYWORKS magazines make reading fun by also covering all the TEKS and objectives that my 5th graders learn in a year, from Vocabulary, Poetry, Non-Fiction, Fiction, Drama, and Persisaive Texts which allow them to create great work. It adds new stories that are historical, as well as fun to read and makes reading fun. By letting the children read a magazine instead of reading a textbook, it allows them to want to read something that doesn’t seem like everyone else has been reading. It also gives students different ways to learn through the activities that are provided in the teachers lesson plans online.
