Some of my students are not interested in reading, especially chapter books. With iPad Minis and the free Storia app from Scholastic, I can get them excited to read.
My students are full of energy and excitement all the time.
Unfortunately very little of that excitement is directed towards books and reading. They love any opportunity to use computers and iPods and any other technology our school has to offer. Our school is full of students living in poverty, so most of them don't have the chance to use these kinds of technology at home.
My Project
I plan to use these iPad Minis in our guided reading books. In general, eBooks are cheaper than real books and with the Storia app from Scholastic I can purchase one book and have access to it on all my iPads. Scholastic is great at finding books that are interesting and on the appropriate levels for my students. I will then be able to have reading groups reading the same books, which allows for more discussion while reading. Having the iPad Minis will hopefully have them more interested and engaged and less frightened of chapter books.
This will help reduce some clutter in my classroom with all the piles of reading group books.
I will just have 8 iPad Minis that will have every group's books on them. It will get the students reading more, and the more they read, the better readers they will become. Good reading is essential to everything people do in life.
