My students are AMAZING! They are silly, determined, hard working, and dedicated to becoming independent thinkers. They want to improve in their learning and they know the steps to get there. Each and every day, they show up and try their best.
My students embrace differences within each other and support those around them working towards their own differentiated goals.
The way my classroom is run is by me facilitating small group teaching for a majority of the day. My students know that they all have different needs and that small group learning is the best way to accommodate all of their various levels and stages of understanding. They quickly learn that everyone should work towards their individual goals and be supportive of their peers' progress and success.
Not only do they love learning on their level and improving constantly, but they enjoy being a part of their peers' success too. One of the greatest feelings I had this past year was while I listened to the kids discuss which skills they were working on and how close they were to mastering them. They were encouraging each other and really sharing in each others' success. It was incredible!
My Project
I am requesting sets of Roald Dahl novels for my 2nd grade literacy stations class. For literacy stations, my grade level shares kids and we have them separated according to their various needs and literacy levels. I have the "high" group that ranges from 2nd grade to 6th grade reading levels. I am wanting to incorporate author and novel studies through literature circles to deepen their reading skills and what better author to study than Roald Dahl?! He is creative, imaginative, and the kids love his books!
Having these Roald Dahl novel sets will put a book in every child's hands and will allow them to go deeper in their study.
Author studies and novel studies are a great way to teach literature standards and keep students engaged. I am going to use literature circles to facilitate these studies, which will add the "student collaboration" component to my instruction. These literature circles are like mini book clubs for kids. Every student has a role and they discuss the book as a group, deepening their understanding, and learning to work together. Literature Circles also help foster independent thinkers. To be able to share and discuss the book as a group, you have to develop your thinking independently first and have an opinion to share. These literature circles are student led and the teacher monitors the student's collaboration and understanding.
There are so many benefits to using literature circles in the classroom and receiving these Roald Dahl books is the first step in implementing this instruction into my literacy stations class.
