Isn't it great when a book just comes alive in your mind? This happens when kids get to listen to an audio book. The characters come to life, as the students can hear the expressions in their voices. Suddenly reading becomes easier.
My students attend a rural middle school in North Carolina.
The use of these materials would be with all students, from gifted, to middle range, and special needs. Reading is a huge focus at our school. Students have a block of time every day that is used for independent reading, and we have a Battle of the Books team, who love to read and are encouraged to know their books from cover to cover. They get excited when they are given the opportunity to read.
My Project
I am requesting eight portable CD players and sixteen pairs of headphones. We would use these throughout the school. Many of our special needs students need to listen to an audio book and follow along in their book at the same time, but we have no way to do this, as we don't have CD players or headphones. This would help their comprehension skills. Also, the students on our Battle of the Books team want to read, study, and listen to their books, so that they can have more fun options for memorizing the details of their reading list. Listening to a book can make this so much easier and more enjoyable for both groups. CD players would be available for all students to check out and use when needed.
The use of CD players to listen to audio books would excite our students about reading.
In the students with special needs case, it would help them to enjoy books, when they normally do not like having to spend time reading. Audio books are fun and exciting. It would also help other students to understand how exciting books can be, as it would add an interesting twist. Our Battle of the Books students would be able to focus on the details and plot of their books, and hopefully win!
