My students attend a Title I School in Binghamton, New York. At our school, all children receive free breakfast, snack, and lunch. My students come from all different backgrounds.
As a teacher in a low-income and high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to offer students the opportunity to use resources they may not have access to outside of school.
Some students have very little literacy background. Others have the skills, they just need to know how to use them. Due to our fast paced lessons, these students need as much help as possible in order to be successful!
My Project
Each day in small reading groups, students are given printed books at their "just right" level. We would like to expand their libraries to offer students the opportunity to access books digitally. We are requesting tablets so that students may access more books online. We are in need of tablets in two different sizes. The 10 inch tablets would allow our younger students who rely on larger print and pictures to be successful readers. We hope to expose our students to a variety of genres as well as high interest topics to read, all while engaging them through the use of technology.
Due to the fact that many of our students come from low-income families, they do not have access to tablets with wifi.
In this technology literate world, any interaction with updated technology will increase their literacy as well as their desire to learn and use the new technology!
We will use these materials to aide us in the process of becoming life-long readers. By offering this resource, children will continue to grow and love reading in many different forms.
