This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title 1 school in Houston, Texas, where 100 percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students receive backpacks of food on Fridays to ensure that they will have something to eat.
Despite the hardships that Hurricane Harvey brought destroying some of the Houston area, most of my students returned to school eager to learn.
The storm left many of them with the question, "Why so much water, and where did it come from?" Many of my students lost everything and a couple of them are still living in hotels or with relatives. Upon returning to school my students were not able to supply the basic necessary school supplies.
My Project
My students need exposure to quality books that have characters that interest them. With these books, my students will build their reading and writing skills. While reading the book, "I'm Just Me" students will build their self-esteem while also learning what to do if they should encounter a bully.
A lot of my students do not venture out of their communities and with these books, they can travel to places that they have never been.
They will also learn about others while increasing their understanding and compassion for reading. Reading will also increase their understanding of the world in which they live and their surroundings.
These materials will help my students become excellent readers and prepare them for the next grade level as well as preparing them for the world around them. Without being able to read, their lives will be limited.
