Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every year the needs of my students have to be assessed, not just by standardized tests, but through my daily interactions with them in my classroom.
The majority of my students are bilingual and ESL, from low income families and the entire student population in my school universal free lunch.
It is without a doubt that my students feel a tremendous amount of anxiety and fear of the unknown as they attempt to tackle the English language in a new city, country, and school. For this very reason, I find that it is imperative that my students have access to the right books at the right times with the right reading levels.
Despite the odds faced by my students, I have excellent attendance rates because these students possess a strong desire to learn and be a part of our classroom in every way. These urban students in my ESL and bilingual classes have already started to demonstrate progress towards grade level standards and (not to my surprise) truly enjoy reading!
My Project
Amidst the reading skills, comprehension strategies and habits of discussion that we are learning daily, the urban students in my ESL classroom need the right book for their current reading level.
Most of my students just arrived from Egypt and are struggling readers as they try to balance two languages: Arabic at home and English at school.
The classic book, “Freckle Juice” (written by Judy Blume) is the perfect lexile level for them as they build vocabulary and practice reading and comprehension strategies. With the help of this text, my students will become stronger and more confident readers and writers.
