Do you remember falling in love with learning? Having that teacher that just sparked your love to keep learning? Having that teacher that made you want to come to school?
My students crave coming to school because I make it inviting, exciting, inspire a love of learning and provide a safe place.
I work with students with special needs, each very unique. School is not easy for my students, by any means, and learning, interacting with peers, and following directions is a daily challenge. I hope that I provide my students with lifelong strategies, a sense of self confidence, and instill perseverance.
All of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and receive breakfast at school. Students are coming from low income backgrounds, and have limited experiences. I have a large percentage of students that are bilingual.
My Project
Social Emotional Learning is a focus in my classroom. When you are lacking social emotional skills, it makes learning more difficult. Once you know how to ask for help, work with a partner, and how to manage your actions when you're frustrated, these skills can be applied everywhere. You need these skills for the rest of your life. So we practice, and practice often!
It is so powerful to learn about social emotional skills through children's books.
These books become a conversation starter and a visual link for students' learning.
Books like Patterns of Power, and the Next Step in Reading Intervention allow me to continue to provide the best reading education to students in special education.
It's all about the basics: Reading, and Social Emotional Learning skills.
