My school is a Title I school that serves approximately 400 diverse students in grades 6-8. Nearly all of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and some have no permanent home. Despite this, my students work extremely hard to overcome the many obstacles that they face on a daily basis. Our school is currently closed and because many of my students do not have technology or internet access at home, distance learning has been a big adjustment for our teachers, as well as our students because we are now learning via learning packets that are being mailed home.
Many of my students may not come from prosperous backgrounds, but they soak up every opportunity they have to learn, and this project will help support literacy and help give my students some joy by providing my students with books to read while our school and public libraries are closed.
My Project
Literacy is the key to success, but right now, my students are struggling with getting access to books. Due to circumstances beyond their control, many of them do not have access to the internet or devices in order to take advantage of ebooks. Many of my students rely on the school library in order to get access to books. Unfortunately, this is not possible during this time because of school and public library closures.
This project will give me the opportunity to bridge the socio-economic gap and provide my students with books to be able to take home with them and keep.
This will allow my students to continue to read quality literature, even when the physical library is closed. These books all focus on diversity and reflect the diversity of my students and their struggles and backgrounds.
Unfortunately, statistics show that a vast majority of students who start out behind, stay behind, and many of that drop-out. I don't want my students to be part of that large statistic. It takes just one book to change a child's life. Help make that change in my students' lives.
