My students need ABC materials, such as tactile letters and cards, along with easy reading stories to help them increase their confidence and become better readers.
Have you ever seen the look on a child's face when they first realize that they can read? Even if it is only the letters in their name it is a step and something for them to be proud of.
My students are from a rural area and many of them come from disadvantaged homes.
Some of my students come in to school feeling defeated because other children are much farther along than they are. As a special education teacher I feel that it is my job to make these kids realize that they have reasons to be proud to. To some when a student learns the letters in their name it is just another milestone that they should be crossing, but to me and my students it is a reason for celebration!
My Project
Many special education students have a hard time learning with paper and pencils like the rest of their peers. My students need ABC materials and easy reading stories to help them increase their confidence and become better readers. The tactile letters and the letter sorting is another way to teach them their letters. The easy reader books are a great place to work with a struggling reader. While a second grade child doesn't want to read this book out loud to their class, they love reading stories like this to the preschool and kindergarten students. They also love to read these stories to their younger siblings and to their stuffed animals!
My students needs to feel that they can do this.
They need to have something to be proud of. I want this to be a step in the right direction to show them that they can do a good job and that they should be proud of themselves.
