Students in my classroom come from fifteen different Native American tribes in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska. They live nine months of every year at school, with little to no contact with their families. They come from a variety of home lives but come to school with the hope of a brighter future. Many of my students have become accustomed to not having the newest resources or technology, but they still persevere.
Within a few months of being in my classroom, they learn that they can achieve things that many thought they never would.
They are reading harder books (sometimes even their first chapter book), doing harder math problems, and are able to do their own research on things that interest them.
My Project
Over the past week my students have been "shopping" for a book that they would like to read. Finding the perfect book has been a very exciting opportunity and many of them are already asking when they will be here.
Most of my students have never had the opportunity to choose a brand new book from endless possibilities.
This project has opened the door for every child in my classroom to be the first one to crack open that special book they want to read. I am excited to not only add these new titles to our classroom library, but to also help light the fire of making my students lifelong learners and readers.
