My students need highly engaging books and materials for reading and taking notes. We are learning how to read chapter books and organize our thoughts while reading.
Vibrant, energetic, and eager are only a few terms that describe my students. The are mostly from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of the 30+ students I work with fall in a minority category. They all qualify for special education services.
Despite their struggles with reading, my students are eager to learn and grow.
Using culturally relevant resources combined with the technology to access the learning, I know my students will succeed. I teach a wide range of reading levels, and many students are working on their own personal goals.
Unfortunately, so many at-risk students have never had a meaningful experience with text by 6th grade. By providing several opportunities and a variety of resources, I hope to remedy that with my students.
My Project
"The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo is a phenomenal book that catches any reader. It's an endearing story of change and hope with shorter, attainable chapters. My students could engage in this chapter book without feeling overwhelmed at the length of the chapters.
The students need to make a connection to reading in order to continue their reading growth.
These texts will allow them to connect and feel successful. These texts involve the interests of the students and also present modern issues and events that our middle schoolers deal with.
The binders and pencils will allow us to organize our notes and develop our writing about our reading. Writing and reading go hand in hand, so many of my struggling readers are also struggling writers.
