This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a 6th grade ELA teacher in an urban school district. All of the students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of them come from families who cannot provide basic school supplies. However, They are an amazing group of students!
They are fun, caring, and inquisitive.
I love teaching this age group because they are old enough to “get my jokes”, but still want to please and be loved. I want to do everything I can to give them a wonderful school year.
My Project
We have no reading curriculum at our school, therefore no reading text books. I have purchased many things out of my own pocket to try to provide interesting, yet challenging reading materials for my students. However, there is a limit to the amount of money I can spend. I wanted to provide Scholastic Magazine for my class last year, but didn’t have the resources. Because I teach three classes I need almost sixty copies.
This would allow my students to receive multiple copies of Scholastic Magazine throughout the year.
I know they would be engaged with the current events in this material, making reading fun!
