This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is part of a Title I school where all of the students are able to receive free breakfast and free lunch. My school serves students from two Section 8, federally funded housing areas. Many of our students come from single-family homes and many are economically disadvantaged. The classroom environment I strive to create for my students is a positive one that meets their academic, emotional, and social needs.
My classroom is made of a lively bunch of students who love to learn and love to read.
Although my students are different in many ways, one thing they seem to have in common is they love to explore. My students love to learn in new ways and I strive to create a classroom environment that supports their thirst for knowledge. I want to build a classroom full of lifelong learners. I want my students to leave my classroom with the idea that learning can take place anywhere and in many forms. They need to know they are worthy of achieving anything they can dream.
My Project
I have been able to provide my students with a small classroom library. However, with the school year being well through the second quarter, many of my students have read through the books I have been able to provide. My students have created a list of books they believe the upcoming 5th graders will love to read! These books will give students a wider selection of books that they are personally invested in. Some of the books selected by my students are popular titles like: Red & Lulu, A Loud Winter's Nap, and Tough Cookie. Students will read these books during stations and independent reading time. This year my students are very into book series and we would like to organize our book series in our classroom library.
Being able to read and comprehend are necessary skills students need to develop to be successful not only in school but in their lives after school.
I hope to encourage my students to read for the rest of their lives not just to learn but also for pleasure. Through providing my students with books of their choosing, I can help students to see that there is always a good book available to pick from!
