Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school saying is, "Better today than yesterday! Better tomorrow than today!" I want to make their tomorrow better!
My class consists of a diverse group of learners.
My class has 26 second grade students of varying abilities. The socio-economic background of our students is reflected by our 97% free and reduced-price lunch rate.
I teach in an urban inner city school rich with diversity. Most of my students need additional learning materials to meet grade level expectations. Please help me to make tomorrow better for them!
My Project
My students are enthusiastic learners! They enjoy learning about the world around them. As a child I loved grabbing a book and finding a quiet corner to READ! My mom would drop me off at the public library in our town every Saturday afternoon so I could spend hours looking at and reading books. I have always loved to READ!
Having exciting chapter books available for my students to read will unlock their imagination!
Having the Magic Tree House chapter books by Mary Pope Osbourne in my classroom library will allow my students to choose exciting adventures to read about. The Magic Tree House series also has a lot of content that it allows students to explore and learn about such as The Revolutionary War, Twister on Tuesday, and more! My students will gain knowledge about these topics as well as gain fluency skills and comprehension skills while reading.
Having The Captain Underpants Series by Dav Pikley available in my classroom will excite my reluctant readers to READ! Comic books have long been a way for reluctant readers to start reading! My own husband wouldn't read at age 7 until his parents took him to a comic shop and allowed him to pick out some comics to READ. Dav Pikley writes about two boys who are best friends and write comic book adventures about their Principal becoming Captain Underpants to save the world from disasters. My reluctant readers will love reading these adventures and maybe even teaming up to start writing comics too!
Having the Henry and Mudge series by Cynthia Rylant available for my second graders will allow them to ease into chapter books. This series is perfect for the beginning reader. There are short chapters which struggling readers can dive into. Thank you for helping us READ!
