My students need Kindle e-readers to access an unlimited world of books. The more we read the better our reading comprehension, and the more choice we have in reading, the more we will read.
My students are a diverse group of third graders whose families speak languages other than English at home. All of my students are learning to read, write and speak English at school.
School is the center of the universe for my children, who live in a community where education is valued but money is tight.
My students love learning about the world through books, and they are learning to read using books they choose themselves. But most children don't have any books at home, and the public library is too far for many of them to get to, as their parents work long, varied shifts. My students are from newly arrived immigrant families and their futures (and ours) depend on the foundation we're providing them in a well rounded public school education.
My Project
My students are avid readers but often can't find books that match their ability and interests. Their parents don't have money or time for buying lots of books or for library trips.
I plan to use these new Kindle e-readers to allow my students to borrow an unlimited list of books, so they will read at home as well as at school.
E-readers at home and at school can solve many problems with reading, because my students will be able to access an unlimited list of books and magazines through the library and from school-based subscriptions.
With these new e-readers, I can also preview a book with small groups of students, to excite them about a new series or social studies topic, and I can help English Language Learners access content and reading strategies.
