My school is a Title I school with all students qualifying for free lunch and free breakfast. I teach my 25 students in math, language arts, science, and social studies. They are a diverse group of learners from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds.
My students love to engage in hands-on learning in the classroom.
They love being given opportunities to work together throughout the day. They also love being able to sit together and share moments through reading. My students have built a great classroom community where everyone is celebrated and has a sense of belonging.
My Project
This project will provide my 5th grade students with a monthly subscription to Time for Kids magazine. The Time Magazine subscription will be a great to use to teach and model reading nonfiction texts. These magazines will also be used to keep students up to date on current events around the world.
Reading novels as a class creates meaningful discussions and connections between students.
The three novels that I am requesting will be read together as a class to teach reading standards. Inside Out and Back Again is an excellent novel that will be used to teach poetry with a diverse cultural perspective. Because of Mr. Terupt and One for the Murphys are great novels that will allow for 5th graders to create connections between the text and their own lives.
I would love to be able to share these novels and the Time for Kids magazines with my students.
