My students need class sets of books to improve their reading skills and their sense of unity in the classroom through paired and choral reading.

My Students

I teach a class composed of at-risk, lower-socioeconomic scholars. Even though I have only taught them a few weeks, I have been very impressed with the excitement they show working cooperatively with one another. They work hard and show great drive in the quality of the work they produce.

We are a school that emphasizes attending college and my class has made that their goal.

Most of them will be first-generation college students. I hope to give them the best chance of reaching that goal.

My Project

My students love engaging in adventures together through reading as a class. By using choral, paired and solitary reading, they hone their skills and confidence.

As a class, we have selected two vastly different books to explore this year.

Bomb is historical non-fiction exploring the Manhattan project and the creation of the atomic bomb. King of Shadows introduces students to the world of William Shakespeare while also throwing in a little time travel for good measure. By introducing new books on subjects that my students are already interested in I hope to fuel their desire for reading as they continue their educational journey. By reading together they will be able to share viewpoints with each other and enrich their sense of community in our classroom.
