Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
During this distance learning time, many students in my class have limited access to books at home. Many families rely on our school and public libraries to find books that are engaging for their children. Students are now learning through the online platform Seesaw and reading books on websites like Epic and Tumble Books. However, I notice that some students struggle to read digital books.
Cultivating the social aspects of reading promotes reading engagement!
For example, asking students to share about the books they have read sparks excitement for third-grade readers. Students are thinking of one another and missing our shared daily reading routines in the classroom.
My Project
I am requesting a copy of the book My Friend is Sad for each of my third-grade students. This story features two of my class' favorite characters, Elephant and Piggy. My Friend is Sad is sweet and funny! The book is ideal for teaching specific lessons about reading fluency and expression as well as finding an author's central message.
Beyond supporting reading instruction, this project will strengthen our classroom community by helping students connect socially with one another!
It is hard for students to be apart from one another during this time. They express loneliness and sadness at being isolated from their friends. The social aspects of learning are powerful and often what make learning reading and math enjoyable for third graders. This project aims to start a simple, accessible book club that will nurture students' emotional well-being and promote reading!
