My Students

My students come from a low income area. All of the students qualify for free breakfast. We live in rural area with not much for kids to do. The school playground is a place for them to go. We have a good public library and am surprised at how many of my children do not go.

The area we live in is poor.

A lot of my students are from families where English is a second language. The area has a lot of manual labor jobs and it is hard for families. My students are fast paced and keeping their attention is not an easy thing.

My Project

With the use of these high quality narrative and informational trade books we will be using them as Interactive Read-alouds and Shared Reading books. Students will build language knowledge, content knowledge, and motivation.

In Shared Reading the students have the book in their hands and read as a whole class as well as with a partner.

Students will read and discuss the text together and gain support in their understanding. The book, Blood on the River will be used as the Shared Reading book. Each partner group will have a book to read together and also we use this book to read as a whole class at times.

Vocabulary building is a big part of reading together. Students will have new vocabulary everyday from the books we are reading. Vocabulary instruction is used in both the Interactive Reading as well as the Shared Reading.
