My students need books on a 1st and 2nd grade level. This year at my school we are implementing Accelerated Reader and only have about 20 books on these levels.

My Students

I'm the literacy coach and our biggest challenge is getting students to read books at home. To help with this we added the Accelerated Reader program at our school and have implemented a reward system for students who read these books at home.

We are a small school with about 85% free and reduced lunch.

We have about 365 students in our elementary building. Our school is situated in a rural community that is very small. Our students work very hard but many of them struggle to be on grade level. We have a dedicated and caring staff that work hard to help our struggling readers.

My Project

We have started the accelerated reader program at our school this year to begin to motivate students to read at home. When students read and take a test on the book, they receive rewards based on how much they read. Our students are loving these rewards and it is inspiring students who have never read at home before to read.

This project will help our students because we only have about 20 books on a 1st grade level in our school library.

We are in desperate need to keep our 1st grade level students going. They have read all the books on this level in our library, so we need to stock up more books so they have a selection to choose from.
