My Students

I work in a Title I, K-12th grade school in a special needs self-contained classroom. My students are in this classroom because of various learning and/or behavioral needs that require them to be separated from their peers in the regular education classroom environment. Unfortunately, more than one of my students may have experienced some kind of trauma in their life. Often their needs and/or behavior may be a result of this trauma. Despite of any negative experiences that may have caused them to have various needs, they are amazing and ready to learn when given a good learning environment.

My Project

My school is focusing on how to be a trauma sensitive school and I am proactively seeking assistance to create a trauma sensitive classroom by asking for items and supplies to create a stress-free classroom environment. Specifically, a calm and peaceful environment where they can be engaged and improve their behavior and learning.

I want to improve my students' reading, comprehension skills, and engage my students by transforming my classroom into an interactive and motivating learning environment.

In order to achieve this, I am asking for a Dot Spots carpet for our classroom floor and two Posh Bean Bag chairs. Currently, our tile floor is very hard, and it is not welcoming for students to sit down and relax. The decorative carpet will help make things more comfy. The Posh bean bag chairs will be fun and work as an incentive! I want my students to be excited about learning and reading. I believe providing them with a comfortable spot will encourage them to pick up a book.

I will use these materials to create a literacy and reading center. More than 50% of my curriculum is dedicated to reading, literacy, and language arts and the literacy and reading station will be an impactful addition to my classroom library. My goal is to increase my students'reading skills significantly and these materials will help me create a center to help my students tremendously.
