This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
If you enter my classroom, you will see a diverse group of students building practical math skills to use in the classroom and out. You will hear many accents, as a third of my students are English language learners. You might even smell the leftovers from the free lunch and breakfast all of my students receive.
What you won't hear is that most of my students face poverty at home.
You won't see that many of them have overcome unimaginable obstacles. You will see the joy of learning; you will hear the effort and work we put in every day, despite what we go through.
My Project
Kate DiCamillo is an author that many of us hold in our own hearts from our own childhoods. I have distinct and lovely memories of exploring her worlds and characters. I want to give my students their own chance to form the love of reading.
Third grade presents a shift in instruction: children no longer learn to read but are expected to read to learn.
This shift makes it difficult for struggling students to keep up in other subjects. The good news is that reading is like any other skill, and practice makes perfect. Children with access to books at home do better in school. I am hoping to promote that access.
