Reading to Learn

My students need non-fiction books and activity kits to practice their reading fluency and vocabulary. This will help them to read more accurately and perform better on assessments.

My Students

With the ever decreasing textbook allotment in our schools, I am requesting multi-level non-fiction reading passages to increase students' background knowledge and fluency. The kits I would like will help with cooperative learning and facilitate raising their reading levels.

I work in a Title I school in an urban area in North Carolina.

Almost 100% are economically disadvantaged. My school also has a high English Language Learner population. Many of my students are struggling academically and have not had sufficient opportunities with various print sources. So, they need a lot of visual information and rich text to enhance comprehension.

My Project

Students work in small groups, or with a partner to read and discuss non-fiction passages. Then, they respond in writing to questions I give them or those provided by a program. They partner with another student to read together to practice fluency. Non-fiction text that comes in sets can be used in guided reading, which is a good way to teach reading and comprehension strategies. Students are motivated to learn when there are more interesting, current topics.

This project will make a difference in helping these students love reading, as well as becoming lifelong learners.

As well, it will play an important role in helping them pass standardized tests, such as the end of grade test. Many of these students did not pass the E.O.G. last year, and this will help their literacy growth tremendously and give them a better chance by having a wide variety of non-fiction text to read.
