Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My middle school students come to school each day eager to learn. Our school is a Title 1 school with a high percentage of students on a subsidized breakfast and lunch and dinner program. Their parents are hard working, many working two or more jobs to provide their children with a better life, and a bright future. Most of my students do not have computers or access to the Internet. All of their learning happens in our classroom.
My students are "newcomers", they are new to the United States everything they are experiencing is brand new.
My Project
My students are facing enormous challenges on a daily basis. They are sixth, seventh and eighth graders who are are in the beginning stages of learning English. I am encouraging them to continue to read for pleasure as they are working towards acquiring English Language skills. I believe that if they have access to books in their home language, that they have seen their peers reading, it will inspire them to read.
I've seen their eyes light up when they see books in their home language.
They love to read. I want to provide them with a classroom library rich with classics and current titles, so they will establish the good habit of reading daily. As they acquire English they will be able to transition to books I have in my current library.
