Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Our cousins live in Los Angeles, but I live in California."
"I went to the snow once."
"Where is the ocean?"
These are all questions I get in my 4th grade classroom. Students have not been taught about the resources in their own backyard!
I teach 4th grade at a charter school in a diverse and impoverished, but vibrant neighborhood.
All of my students are language learners who work hard to learn to read and write fluently in academic English. Despite the odds, we believe all of our children will graduate from college!
My Project
Traditionally, our school has not taught much social studies and science because those are not tested at the end of the year. This year, we are committed to integrating science and social studies into our literacy instruction so that our children will truly be college-ready. In order to make this happen, I need to have more concept-rich books in my classroom library to use for whole-class shared reading and for students’ independent research. The first social studies unit we will cover is California Geography, which will include investigations into the many regions in California. I need books at many different levels about ecosystems, climates, and landforms in California so that students can be immersed in this new social studies unit.
I believe my students have an incredible gift to be bilingual, biliterate, and multicultural.
My hope is to create a learning environment that nourishes their inherent gifts and allows them to access the rocky terrain through the halls of academia. These books will build the foundation of that success as they learn to love reading and discussing and sharing content-rich books.
