Reading to Learn Math

My students need 54 book titles to build background knowledge to have better comprehension as they learn. Our building is over 60% poverty having these books will help build background.

My Students

Think about all the great things you did as a kid....going to the zoo, the circus, seeing other places, camping. Many of my students do not have these opportunities to help with their learning. We need to build on their background knowledge and foster a love of reading and books.

We are a public elementary school grades K-5 in southern Minnesota.

Our free and reduced lunch numbers are over 60%. We have many nationalities within each classroom as well as new comers to the states. We have a large English Language Learner population, not only being minorities but all children who are living in poverty.

My Project

Books open a whole new world to children. I want to open as many as possible to help foster the love of learning within my students. We are smart, capable and valuable! Having books to provide the beginning of building background on the math concepts is a solid start for many of my students who need to see, hear, feel in order to have something to "hang their hat" on.

My students will LOVE MATH!!

Something that many students feel they are not good at and is too hard. Using literature to teach these concepts takes the math anxiety down a notch. I want children who love all aspects of education to leave my classroom! Thank YOU!
