I am a first year kindergarten teacher at a Title One school in Oakland where over eighty percent of our student population receives free school lunch. Many of my students are in crisis situations at home and school is their safe and happy place. I am committed to providing my students with engaging learning activities and making our classroom a safe and inviting environment.
Having proficient reading and writing skills is essential for all students to be successful as they move through elementary school and beyond.
My kindergarten students will enter school with a variety of reading abilities and school skills. Each day, we will work to develop the skills necessary to be lifelong learners in our community.
My Project
I want my students to have plenty of opportunities to engage with literature in and out of school. A variety of literacy activities will take place each day in the classroom. By having a book box for each student with "just right" books, I can differentiate instruction so my students can learn and develop their reading skills at their own pace. The collection of Elephant and Piggie books will be sent home with students each week. These books are perfect for beginning readers because of the picture clues and repetition of dialogue. When students take the books home, they are encouraged to read it multiple times with family members, which is great for building self-confidence in reading aloud.
One of the best ways to engage my students in reading and writing is by having students co-author class books.
The binding machine is necessary for these books to last through the school year.
The products I have requested will give students access to literature and learning activities that they otherwise would not have access to. Every donation helps make my classroom come alive and makes learning fun for my students. Thank you for any help with this project. We appreciate you!
