On Monday when we share what we did over the weekend my students thrill with stories of pig hunting, surfing, spear fishing, and sports! You'll find few couch potatoes or video gamers in my class; they take full advantage of their paradise home. I have the privilege of serving twenty - four lovely fifth graders on the island of Kauai. I have a diverse class of students culturally, economically, linguistically, and academically. The students embrace their differences and take care of one another both in and out of the classroom. They understand that community matters and are proud of their families, culture, and island. One of my favorite parts of our classroom community is their love of stories. They love to tell stories, read stories, and listen to stories. I try to weave as many stories into my lessons as possible to take advantage! I should also tell you my students are hilarious! I get to laugh everyday with these loving, funny, compassionate kids!
The students in my room deserve to have a classroom library of amazing literary and informational texts that are at their reading levels and interesting to them. My students come in to fifth grade as tentative readers. Over the course of the first quarter I introduce them to the magic and wonder of literary texts through novel studies and a rich classroom library. Eventually they all come to love reading literary text because they can self select the books that interest them.
However we lack a collection of engaging informational texts on topics that interest them.
I would like to build a new wing on our library to house a burgeoning collection of informational texts that will capture the minds of our readers. They will be able to use the collection to select books they care about and practice the skills we are learning in our readers workshop time. The collection will also serve as a resource for projects and classroom learning happening throughout the year.
