Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school in North Carolina where a free breakfast and lunch are provided to every single student. With the generosity of the "Backpack Program," we are also able to send packages of food home with students for the weekends. Our students are often in need of the most basic school supplies, like pencils and paper, just so they can complete their homework. I can't even imagine how difficult it is to learn when you deal with this stress on a daily basis.
Despite all these financial challenges, our students do not operate as "me" but always as "we." Everything they have is shared and they love to help others.
They work hard every day and enjoy learning. They are kind, selfless, caring, and have so much empathy. If they hear a teacher or friend or classmate is having a bad day, they shower them with cards and hugs and words of encouragement.
Seeing this every day makes me want to provide the best possible education for them to make sure they can accomplish whatever they want in life. I can tell that since you're here, you also want to make that happen.
My Project
If a child does not know how to read, we teach them to read. If a child does not know how to ride a bike, we teach them to ride a bike. If a child does not know how to behave... we should teach them that too! The core focus for building my classroom community is social and emotional learning, also called SEL. We use picture books, discussion, role playing, and other activities and toys to learn how to handle emotions like ANGER and JEALOUSY and why it is important to FOLLOW RULES, take RESPONSIBILITY for our actions, and tell the TRUTH.
At the start of every new school year I remember how important it is to teach our children how to be good friends, classmates, and CITIZENS.
Character education is just as important as reading and STEM. We need more than educated people. We need people who will use their education to cause positive change. For this project, my vision is to incorporate picture books about character education, emotions, and social skills into every day reading. I want the books to include children of all different colors and be really engaging for my students so that everyone feels valued.
