This school year, I will have 20 second grade students from various backgrounds. All of my students will have specific learning needs including some who have special needs such as English Language Learners and exceptional students. My second graders have so much potential that has yet to be tapped into, and I hope that I will start to bring out the greatness that they all have to offer.
At my school, students are rewarded for reading all of the Florida Sunshine State Junior books.
Students love reading these books with their families and love the incentives for reading all 15 books. My school is at double the capacity with enrollment, and, with lack of funding from the state, classrooms are suffering. We do not have enough of these books for all K-2 students to read.
Each year at my school, the students receive a list of 15 Florida Sunshine State books to read for a reward. They get incentives throughout the process to read these challenging books. The library only gets a few copies of each, making it hard for all students to participate. At the local libraries, there are waiting lists months in advance. The students love reading these books to go to the end of the year field trip.
If I had a class set of the books, all my students could read the books and meet their goal.
These books are great to read whole group or small group. All students would be able to participate in the program, no matter their reading level or ability.
