My students need literature that is of interest to them. Bring on Captain Underpants or Harry Potter and let's get them sitting down in the reading corner.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager to learn and win academically but do not have the necessary tools for success but have the desire to succeed if given the opportunity. The majority of our schools students enter a new grade in August reading well below grade level. In order for them to succeed academically, my students have to have numerous opportunities to pick up a book, that interests them and captures their attention, and read!
My goal is to provide my students a positive learning environment that will ensure them a continued path to academic success!
Every time they have an opportunity to pick up a book and sit down and read it is a step in the right direction for academic success.
My Project
I am requesting guided reading level books for my 4th grade English Language Arts students. The majority of my students do not have the financial means nor the transportation to get to the local library to check out literature. Our school strives to have our students "read and graduate" at least once during the school year. This means each student must read a book, take a quiz, and pass the quiz. The average number of books each student needs to read to graduate is over thirty books.
My students face many hardships on a daily basis.
Many of their families cannot provide the basic necessities for their children let alone money for reading books. My students also enter 4th grade reading anywhere from 1 to 2 levels below grade level or at grade level. We need books covering all ranges of reading levels.
As my students literacy skills improve it is necessary to have a wide range of reading levels on hand for them to readily access. Have a classroom library and a quiet corner for them to curl up and read a book will give them the advantage they need for academic success in 4th grade and beyond!
