Hi! I am a first year teacher from South Carolina. At our school, almost 50% of the students are on a free or reduced lunch program. I teach English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. My class is composed of a wonderful group of fourth graders.
As a new teacher, I am struggling to find the funds for all of my classroom needs. I have had the opportunity to visit several other classrooms during observations to find out what activities work best for teaching how to use graphic text features to enhance reading comprehension.
Students love to read "Time for Kids," and it is an excellent real-world resource to use when teaching how to use graphic and text features to improve comprehension, such as charts, graphs, photographs, captions, maps, headings, etc. I have seen other successful teachers using the "Time for Kids" magazines in their classroom as a small group activity. Students especially enjoy completing teacher-led "scavenger hunts" throughout their magazines, answering questions based on graphic text features.
This magazine is unique because it allows students to read selections and answer questions based on real events happening around the world. Every child has his/her own strengths as a reader, and reading this magazine will help students improve their comprehension while gaining knowledge about world events.
