I teach in Dallas, Texas. Students here at predominately Hispanic (96%) of which 92% are economically disadvantaged. The neighborhood is simple yet proud of it's various heritages that can be found here.
The students that I work with are those that have severe deficit in reading skills that does not allow them to be competitive with peers in reading comprehension whether it be for pleasure or academic purposes, like state exams.
It is my goal to teach them the reading skills necessary to read for pleasure as well as to learn now and in the future. Reading is the fundamental key to all success and I feel these scholars deserve that right to learn by all means.
Using technology in a small group setting or an actual station that scholars can rotate to allows the opportunity for all students to use technology at one point or another. We live in a digital world and not all students have access at home to technology, so school is usually their only chance to use it. They are able to learn to read, by listening to good readers read to them as well as learn how to use computers effectively in order to be able to be part of the competitive world they live in. Providing scholars the opportunity to develop the love for reading as well as experience technology is my goal for them.
