My students need 4 portable CD players, 4 headphones, batteries, and a battery charger to listen to books that may otherwise be too challenging during our daily 90-minute reading block.
Do you remember being told you were not a good reader or that you could not read the books that all your friends were reading because they would be too hard? Help provide those students who want to gain a love for reading by providing tools for individualized learning through listening.
Our school is a safe and loving environment.
Our focus is our students. Our goal is for all students to learn. Our school is filled with a wide variety of academic levels as well as socioeconomic backgrounds. Our public county school houses almost 550 students K-5 with 44% of those students receiving subsidized lunches. The student population is primarily made up of white children with 14% African American, 12% Hispanic, 4% multi-racial.
In my 5th grade classroom, all students, regardless of their backgrounds, have the potential and desire to learn. Our school has focused this year to exposing all students with good literature and modeled a love for reading at all ages. Our principal is even completing a 180 book challenge (reading 1 book per day). She shares this with our students and the enthusiasm is contagious.
However, those popular books at every level aren't so popular when you are the student who is reading two grade levels behind.
My Project
Through the 4 portable CD players I will be able to provide an individualized learning through listening environment for my students. Providing them with CDs of favorite book titles will allow my struggling readers access to the hottest titles. Our school embraces a 90-minute daily reading block. During this 90 minutes, each child has a minimum of 20 minutes of silent reading time. Some days they may have close to an hour. Giving students another option for reading allows me to conference with individual students on what they are reading and to teach them strategies to become a better reader.

Putting quality literature in the hands of my students has been top priority this year.
I can only imagine the impact these CD players will have when my struggling students are given the opportunity to read the "hottest titles" that everyone is reading. Not only will they be gaining knowledge, but they will also be gaining a LOVE for reading!
