My students love making music! They are creative, musical, careful, kind and they love to explore sounds. Each class gets to have music for 25 minutes two and a half times a week. They want to be able to make a great program this year despite being unable to perform with other classes or have an audience.
Kids need music now more than ever.
They need to have a way to express their creativity and thrive in a safe environment. Music is all about bringing both people and ideas together.
My Project
Students love to play along with stories. We use our instrument kits to create sound effects, replicate phrases, and recreate the stories ourselves. We have had to get creative with the things we can do in class because we can't play any music games that involve touching or sharing and sometimes we can't even be at school.
The students have really enjoyed reading and playing along with books way more than I expected.
I have found that interactive stories and stories about music help break up the activities and keep the kids excited and focused. During a typical music class (25 minutes) students need 3-6 activities with varying levels of focus intensity.
A single book can be used as: a calm activity of just listening to the story, a creative activity where they come up with their own sounds, a focused activity where we learn and practice rhythm patterns to certain phrases, a group activity where they work together to create songs, or a performance activity where they put lots of concepts together. Now that's fun!
