We are an incredibly diverse, urban school, where families struggle to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Our classroom is comprised of 30 students, in the seventh and eighth grade, who come from more than 17 countries, with more than 10 different first languages spoken, and 78% of our students are entitled to free lunches. Additionally, all of my students have special needs. Despite all these challenges, my students still show up with a smile each day.
During a recent book club experience, a small group of students was able to use my tablet and splitter, in order to listen to their book, while reading along in the text. They had been reading on their own and struggling to get through 7 pages in a 45 minute period, due to decoding and fluency difficulties. This, in turn, caused comprehension difficulty, and the students became disengaged and fell behind their classmates. Once they began listening to the book, they were able to cover 20+ pages of text in that same 45 minute period.
While the impact on this group was amazing, there were other groups that would have benefited from the same technology use.
This project will allow my struggling readers to increase their fluency and comprehension, while removing the burden of decoding.
