I am a first grade teacher at Community Academy Public Charter School in Washington, DC. My class consists of 20 students, including 4 children from other countries, and 2 exceptional children. To address the diverse needs of this group of students, I use academic centers in my classroom. I have purchased some books and tapes for my listening center, but I would like to expand my listening library. Listening to a fluent reader helps children learn correct pacing, intonation, and pronunciation. While students listen, they can follow along with the words in the book, thus connecting oral to written language. Students love to put on the headphones and sit in the listening center, and they are silent and focused during reading. In summary, when a class integrates read alouds into its daily learning activities, students are exposed to a model of excellent reading, students can connect spoken language to print, and students are engaged by the use of technology. I have separated my proposals into three parts, in hopes that my class may receive at least some materials soon. These three proposals are made up of kits of books including four copies of each book and a cassette tape. In this proposal, I am requesting "I Can Read" read-alongs (Set 3) and Favorite Picture Book Cassette Read-Alongs. Rotating these books in the listening center will help expose students to a variety of reading material throughout the school year. Using the listening center in my classroom is an opportunity to build the literacy skills my first graders need to succeed. My students and I appreciate any help you can give us!
