First grade is the year were a child's' reading begins to prosper. As a 1st grade teacher it is not only to have my students be reading on grade level but also have them develop a love for reading at a young age. To do that they need to have a variety of books ranging from ability levels and genres.
I teach at an IB Magnet school.
Part of the IB student learner profile is to not only develop internationally minded students but to also develop inquirers. To foster my first graders inquiring minds I need to be able to provide them with appropriate materials.
As with all schools, my first graders are very diverse. They have different personalities which cause them to have different reading interests as well as different reading abilities.
My Project
I have asked for 6 copes of multiple books. These books will be used in small group reading instruction.
Small group reading instruction is very important. It allows you to focus on individual student needs to help grow their reading. In my small group instruction we will focus on a variety of topics ranging from new reading strategies that will improve comprehension, decoding strategies, and vocabulary.
Donations to this project will help my students develop critical reading skills that are appropriate to their individual level.
In turn this will help develop a love for reading creating life long readers. Reading is a very critical subject and skills have to be fostered at a young age. These resources will help students reading abilities grow.
